John Schappert leaves Microsoft, returns to EA
The high-stakes executive trading game between Microsoft and Electronic Arts continues! John Schappert – corporate vice president of LIVE, software and services at Microsoft since 2007 and, before that, founder of Madden-dev Tiburon at EA – is returning to EA to replace John Pleasants as COO, reports IndustryGamers. Pleasants is headed to social gaming company Playdom. Schappert was brought on as COO and Pleasants – taking the hint, we'd say – "elected to pursue another opportunity," EA said.
Schappert may be familiar to many of you as the man delivering many of Microsoft's Xbox keynotes of late, including the most recent keynote at E3 this month. Effective July 14 – and after less than two years on the job at Xbox – Schappert will return to EA. "After nearly two decades working in or around this company, I've got EA in my blood," he said. "This is a team that is intensely focused on quality and innovation. I'm looking forward to rejoining EA as Chief Operating Officer and helping grow the business on new platforms and in new markets."
EA bossman John Riccitiello said, "We are thrilled to welcome John Schappert back to EA. He has a great track record as a leader and innovator in our industry. His years of experience with EA and in Microsoft's Xbox business, provide him great insight into recognizing what consumers want."
Of course, following the current pattern, one would expect another EA executive to leave Electronic Arts for Microsoft, in the great Mattrick, Moore, and Schappert tradition. Microsoft is looking to break with tradition and leave Schappert's position unfilled, telling IndustryGamers, "Marc Whitten and Phil Spencer will lead their respective businesses, LIVE Services and Microsoft Game Studios, reporting directly to Don Mattrick. Microsoft has complete confidence in the leadership of Marc and Phil and that their teams will remain focused and on track as we ramp up for this holiday."

EA official site lists PS3 version of Left 4 Dead 2
It's no secret that Valve isn't a big fan of the PS3. When the company revealed Left 4 Dead 2 as an Xbox 360/PC exclusive, no one acted surprised. However, PS3 may be getting its own version of the multiplayer FPS if the official EA website is to be believed. Not only is PS3 listed in the "Coming Soon" section of the site, but a quick glance of EA's games page reveals placeholder box art for the game as well. This could be a sign that EA is working on a PS3 port; the company did work on the PS3 version of The Orange Box.
Or, it could be a database error. A PS3 version of the original Left 4 Dead was rumored after an accidental listing was placed on retailer HMV's website. That, for those of you keeping track, didn't come to fruition.

Joy be thine, as EA has confirmed Mirror's Edge won't be the last we see of Faith. In speaking with Videogamer back at E3, EA's senior VP of EA Games Europe, Patrick Soderlund, stated, "You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It's just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I'm excited about what we do."
Of course, one mustn't jump to conclusions and automatically label this as a sequel. Soderlund could've meant anything based on that comment. EA could be working on a full-fledged sequel (something we desperately need), sure, or could be adapting a port for some other system. Or, the company could be making a spiffy new Flash game for all we know. Only time will tell, but the important thing is that no matter what this project turns out to be, we all have more parkour-based gameplay to look forward to down the line. And that's a very good thing.
EA exec states there won't be more Godfather games
Electronic Arts told the LA Times during an interview this week that the Godfather franchise is done at the publisher. EA Games label president Frank Gibeau told the paper, "We're not going to do another one." He then noted that there was no Godfather game in the schedule going out three years.
EA's PR followed up with the Times to say no decision had been made about the fate of the mafia franchise and that "Paramount is a great partner." The speculation is that EA it toning down on licensed properties and working on making a stable of original franchises to exploit.

Who ever doubted (after seeing the ending of the game, which literally screamed for a sequel) that Crysis was meant to be a trilogy, lo and behold, you unfaithful people:Cevat Yerli himself, the big kahuna at Crytek, came with the confirmation that not one, but two sequels are envisioned for the alien-shooting franchise.
"The game is designed as a trilogy, so you have two more installments to come and the ending is planned deliberately. But I cannot answer any more questions here please as we want to keep some surprises for you all," said Yerli during a chat last month with the In-Crysis community.
Although many technical details about the future installments of the game were revealed (including SS4 implementation or further use ofDX10 in Vista), no other aspect was revealed. However, some inquisitive guys from GameStar Germany have determined Steven Bender, boss of the animation department, to let the cat out of the bag: Crysis 2 will focus on...graphics. Oh my God... It wasn't enough that Crysis 1 simply owns any other game at this chapter, no, they had to make it even better.
"Special attention is thereby to the courses of motion as well as the face textures and animations. Thus a still more realistic play feeling is to be achieved. A avowed goal is to be approximated it an experience on film level."
Hm...no kidding...I wonder what hardware you'd have to buy to get that sort of experience... It's� pretty much obvious that even 3 SLI high-end Nvidia cards kneel before the 1+ million lines of code, 1GB of textures and 85,000 shaders that Crysis currently packs. (Did you know that in a single tree from Crysis there's more technology involved than in the entire Far Cry?)
Anyway, according to Yerli, the ending of the trilogy is already planned, but that doesn't mean Crytek will just shut the windows, switch off the lights and send everyone home. The company has expanded in Eastern Europe (with offices in Budapest and Kiev) and has some super-top-secret project in development for PlayStation 3, which means there's still a lot of work to do.
OK, but please, can we make a suggestion? Could you make Crysis 2's gameplay a little more appealing? We certainly love the graphics rendered by CryENGINE 2, but just shooting crazy, cold-blooded aliens in zero G environments is, well, a lot less appealing than shooting trees...
